Jelly Roll Crib Quilt: A Project Update

This one has been a long time in the works. A quilt project holds so many opportunities for procrastination for me, but I feel so much better when I buckle down and just finish it. I started plans for this quilt for a friend who had her baby in January. Shortly after this, Eli was laid off from work, so I held off on buying the fabric until he was secure in his employment again. And then I proceeded to stare at the pile of fabric for another month.... Mea culpa!

I cut out the backing a few inches larger than I wanted the finished quilt to be.

Then I cut the fabric into 2" strips. My rotary cutter made this job so much easier! It's amazing that it works so well yet, considering the fact that I've had it since I was 16. It's 17 years old!!!

...and then got put in baby jail!

Laying the strips out on the backing, I cut each strip's length specially for the spot I wanted it. I overlapped each strip a 1/4" for seam allowance.

Finished laying them out, time to sew the strips together...

Strips all sewn together. Can you find the row I sewed upside down? Hint: 11th row from the bottom. The green strip is supposed to be on the right, but as it is it places a couple vertical seems too close together. Even now I'm tempted to rip out seems and fix it....

I flipped the backing over, right side out, and laid the batting over to cut to size.

Layers all together now, I ironed everything flat...

(DO NOT LAY A HOT IRON ON CARPET! 

I now know this important fact)

...and then pinned the edges for sewing, folding an inch of the backing up over the front to make the border.

This was the first quilt I ever machine quilted. It turned out better than I had hoped! I only had to rip out three seams....

Finished!

The finished size was about 33.5"x 49.5"
